What are food intolerances and food allergies?
Food intolerance is a general term to describe a bad reaction to a particular food or ingredient. Some people have an intolerance to certain foods which means that if they eat that food it can make them feel ill. There are a range of foods which can cause this reaction in those affected, the most common of these being cow's milk, eggs, soya, wheat and shellfish.
A food allergy is when the body's immune system reacts to particular type of food protein (e.g. the protein found in peanuts). People with food allergies must avoid such problem foods, as, although the severity of reactions can vary, they can be very serious, in some cases. If you think you may have a food allergy or food intolerance, you should consult your GP for expert advice on how best to manage your diet.
How does Iceland label own brand products to help people who suffer from food allergies or food intolerances?
To help customers with food allergies, Iceland always highlights the presence of an ingredient that may trigger off an allergic or an unpleasant reaction in the allergy advice box and in the ingredients list. For example, where a product contains gluten, 'Contains gluten' will be listed in the allergy advice box. Other problem ingredients such as milk, egg, soya, fish, shellfish and nuts are also highlighted in this way.
The following ingredients listing perhaps best explains how this information will look on Iceland Brand products:
