Alzheimer's Research UK

Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) will be Iceland’s lead charity for the third year in 2013/14. We first adopted ARUK as our Charity of the Year in 2011/12, during which we raised more than £1.2 million through the Iceland Everest Expedition and the efforts of our colleagues throughout the business. We pledged to follow this by raising a further £1 million in 2012/13.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity, investing in world class, pioneering scientists who are driving forward research towards treatments, preventions and a cure.

In 2011/12 we began our fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) in spectacular style with the Iceland Everest Expedition. Iceland’s founder and Chief Executive Malcolm Walker, with his son Richard, climbed to the North Col of Everest at 23,000 feet and four more experienced climbers went on to plant the Iceland and ARUK flags at the summit in May.

Following Malcolm’s inspiring example, more than 150 colleagues from North East England completed a mass climb of Snowdon, while others climbed Ben Nevis and completed the Three Peaks Challenge as part of our fundraising efforts for ARUK. Other initiatives during our annual charity week in August 2011 included sponsored walks, cycle rides, raffles, the recording of a song, a beach party and a night on the town in wellies filled with custard – plus the sale of a speedboat generously donated by one of our customers.

In total we raised more than £1.2 million for ARUK during 2011/12, specifically for research into early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. We then set ourselves the target of raising a further £1 million for this great cause in 2012/13, to help fund a crucial study to improve early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.

Our fundraising got off to a great start in May 2012 when we donated to ARUK a total of £139,277 raised through the 5p carrier bag levy in our stores in Wales: this donation will fund ARUK’s Welsh research programme.

In November 2012 Malcolm took part in the Iceland Antarctic Expedition, In The Footsteps of Legends, a gruelling trek to the geographic South Pole with three wounded soldiers from the Royal Dragoon Guards. The Expedition commemorated the centenary of Captain Scott’s ill-fated Polar expedition and the heroism of another soldier from the Royal Dragoon Guards, Captain Lawrence Oates.

Everyone can also donate to the UK’s leading dementia research charity by downloading the official charity single “Always” from the website of singer-songwriter Rupert Stroud, with 100% of the profits going to ARUK.

Dementia is one of the biggest and most feared epidemics of our time, and the UK’s greatest medical challenge affecting over 820,000 people across the country. Surrounding those people is a network of family members and carers profoundly affected by the condition. In fact, around half the UK population is touched by dementia through a family member or close friend.

Outside the enormous social impact of dementia, it also poses a huge economic challenge. The cost of dementia to the UK economy is estimated to be £23bn - more than heart disease and cancer combined. In spite of this, and in spite of some recent Government research investment, scientists working on dementia are still outnumbered one to six by those working in cancer.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. As research experts, they specialise in funding world-class, pioneering research at leading universities to find preventions, treatments and a cure for dementia. They believe science and innovation hold the key to defeating dementia and invest in the scientists learning more about the condition and its causes.

Their findings improve the lives of everyone affected by dementia now and in the future. Alzheimer’s Research UK forgespartnerships with Government and other key organisations to make dementia research a national priority. The charity encourages everyone to join them in supporting research and achieving a world free from dementia.
